The Classic Center Arena project includes the design and construction of a new public assembly facility/arena space and related areas to accommodate a permanent seating capacity of approximately 5,500. The facility will have the capacity to hold 8,500 people with the ability to transform for any occasion from concerts and sports tournaments (including an ice rink) to banquets and general sessions. Geo-Hydro provided Geotechnical and Environmental services during design and construction and is actively providing materials testing and special inspections. A challenge on the project was large amounts of rock that prevented complete installation of the aggregate pier foundation system, resulting in undercutting to rock and backfilling with flowable fill or graded aggregate base. Interesting construction features include concrete raker beams for stadium seating construction, majority of the structure constructed out of concrete, and replacement of a rail line for potential future light rail. Geo-Hydro has worked closely with the design and construction team to meet the schedule demands.
